Forklift operator safety and operational fitness starts with properly maintained forklifts. Like your personal car or truck, there are components on your forklifts that require periodic service to maintain performance and prevent breakdowns.

Some lift truck components receive constant use, or are more vulnerable to deterioration because of heavy utilization or extended service. Hoses and rubber parts should be proactively replaced on a set schedule in order to avoid problems with leakage or failure.

Replacing forklift parts before they degrade or completely fail can prevent much costlier repair work in the future. As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Depending on your particular forklift manufacturer you may have prescribed replacement intervals for specific components. In more general terms, the parts you should proactively replace during scheduled maintenance are:

  • Rubber Parts and Power Steering Hoses: At least every 4,000 hours or 2 years
  • Reservoir Tank Hose: At least every 4,000 hours or 2 years
  • Wheel Cylinder Rubber Parts: At least every year, or 2,000 hours
  • Master Cylinder Rubber Parts: At least every year, or 2,000 hours
  • Hydraulic Hose: At least every 4,000 hours or 2 years
  • Lift Chain: At least every 3 years, or 6,000 hours
  • Swing Lock Cylinder: At lease every 10,000 hours

There are other parts that may also need regular replacement, including:

  • Forklift battery: these will usually last at least 5 years, and with proper handling they can last much longer. However, all batteries will eventually need to be replaced.
  • Forklift tires: once tires erode under the 50% line, have tearing or general disintegration problems, or form flat areas, they should be changed immediately.
  • Bearings: any failing bearings should be attended to right away to maintain smooth operation of the forklift.

Lift Truck Service Supplies

We also offer supplies and materials for general forklift maintenance. Any regular forklift maintenance should include:

  • Routine Lubrication: all moving parts or joints should be oiled on a regular basis.
  • Fluids: Lead acid battery water and fluids for hydraulic systems should be checked on a regular schedule.
  • Charging & Battery Service: A regular charging schedule is vital for your lift truck’s battery life and performance.
  • Gauge Inspection: for safety, all instruments and gauges must be inspected on a routine schedule. Not only is this a good idea, it’s also an OSHA regulation within the compliance section 1910.178(q)
